More than 50% of mortality (and disability) caused by cardiovascular diseases can be aver- ted, or at least drastically reduced, if only the most common risk factors are corrected. Suppor- ting this is the World Health Organization itself in its report. It would be enough to assimilate this warning to be friends of our heart, the most important muscle of the body, the supplier of oxygen to the brain. It is a friend who works in silence, the heart beats rhythmically without our realizing it, often without the awareness of its vital role and while it adapts to all conditions: pumping harder during exercise, slowing down when we are calm and relaxed. Beginning with these premises to eli- minate the risk factors, at least those avoidable ones (excluding genetic factors), depends only on us, in other words through our lifestyle: smoking, physical inactivity, obesity, just remembering the most common ‘transgressions’ of so-called modern life. In addition to the health benefits, there’s even waist size: there is no diet that works unless accompanied by movement and physical activity, good for he- alth at all ages, as claimed by the dietitians. Surely less medication is called for when lifestyle is the real tonic of the heart. What better time to reiterate old, and all the more valid, recommendations than on the occasion of World Heart Day (29 September). Cuore-Vita Association invites everyone to attend the event in a constructive and not only celebratory spirit. It is a day that wants to stimulate reflection, an awareness for good heart health throughout the year. It is with the heart that you love, but how much do we love our heart?

Alaugh a day … Maybe not enough to keep the doctor away but surely good for your health. It is no secret that laughter therapy (gelotology) is practised on a consolidated basis, as a new modern science. Is it not the volunteer clown-doctors, in white coats and red clown nose, that make sick children smile? Well, laughing is good for you. Laughter, say the scholars behind this new therapy, may be the best of drugs; the important thing is that it really comes ‘from the heart’. Laughter unleashes endorphins, it reactivates the body’s energy and helps us to endure pain. Above all it wakes up the brain to the body for the benefit of our mental and physical wellbeing. In short, a good laugh is a great antidote to stress when we accumulate excess, which in our busy everyday life is one of the sworn enemies of our heart. Even in difficult times there’s a pretext for liberating laughter; a joke, a satire on the telly, an evening with friends. It’s an easy way to pull the plug without necessarily resorting to a doctor or pharmacist; laughter is simply a personal way of handling stress. Not surprisingly, the World Health Organization itself defines health not as the absence of disease, but as a state of perfect mental and physical wellbeing and social development. Why shouldn’t a laugh be one of the right ingredients of this simple ‘recipe’? A day without a smile, is a day lost, said Chaplin, who lived until he was 88 years old.

New year, new life. A ready-made statement that should, in any case for some, be a healthy motivation albeit gradual, to change their way of life for the better. Change you can, in certain cases, you have to when, over time, bad habits are likely to jeopardize your health. Can’t we do it on our own? Better to get help than always put it off until tomorrow. In the U.S.A for example, there are (free) services to help people to stop smoking or to give advice on the use of drugs (use, not abuse). Not only that. Using smartphones, suggestions arrive on healthy diets, how to measure blood pressure, on helpful physical exercise and any other advice that can motivate people to care for the health of your heart. If this is done overseas why can’t we do it? Cuore-Vita has always been striving to spread a culture of health in the form of bite-size advice, easy to understand and easy to put into practice. We have the same technology, the same tools for easy communication as countries most aware of the subject. Is it perhaps a touch of willpower that we’re missing? Admitting it would already be a start to change course. Spring is upon us, the season of awakening is ideal for finding stimulation and healthful energy.

Announce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Food for thought in the words of a luminary of Cardiology, Dall’Olmo Charles, president of the Michigan Vascular Center. Be your own physician is an abiding and all the while valid prescription and options to put it in practice abound. In this regard, there are initiatives beyond our borders where the culture of prevention begins at school age. Such as, how to bring the youngest children to use instruments to measure pressure. It ‘s just an example but you get the idea. Just press a button and the minimum and maximum appear on a display, even the heart beat. A no-brainer, and American teenagers, children of modern technology, welcome it with the enthusiasm and curiosity one experiences with a new game. Learning by playing is easier! Testing dad’s, mom’s, siblings’ and classmates’ pressure becomes an engrossing and even fun game. Hence the health concept is expanding spontaneously in environments that should be, par excellence, education gymnasia bringing awareness to these issues: the school and the family. Why shouldn’t these experiences already designed elsewhere make inroads in our communities, in addition to the canonical information campaigns so commendable for their purposes? Our children, who excel at pressing buttons on the playstation, would certainly not be outdone. It would suffice to involve them! The editorial staff wish you all a happy Christmas!

The publication date of this issue of our magazine could not fall more appropriately given the occasion of World Heart Day (September 29). That’s why our Association rightly wants to be at the forefront of the event with a series of initiatives, including the special issue of a postal mark and a themed stamp issued by the State Philatelic and Numismatic Company that has also attracted enthusiastic attention across the ocean. The message contained in a square of so few centimetres is clear: heart health starts with prevention through a series of healthy lifestyles. San Marino already has an optimal coverage of defibrillators throughout its territory, a wealth that, as stated by the Secretary of State for Health (see interview inside), is worth enhancing and strengthening in terms of communication and information so that the service is optimally beneficial. Hoping that all citizens take action by participating in this Cuore-Vita, Heart-Life anniversary celebration capturing its true meaning: the event is tied to a day, the message applies all year round.

Our magazine widens its horizons thanks to the contribution of new partnerships from Italy and the United States. Experts who have made their experience and professionalism at our (and your) disposal on those topics that have always been our warhorses: the defence of health and healthy lifestyles.
Summer is the ideal season to regain physical form, to remove a good dose of that rust accumulated in months lived indoors from our body. Self-will and common sense have to walk hand in hand, without venturing into do-it-yourself diets or improvising yourselves to be athletes from one day to the next.
Behavioural measures like daily physical activity and proper nutrition are a universal ‘cure’: they benefit the heart not just the waistline.
The Scientific Committee of Cuore-Vita has new initiatives in the works stimulated by the interest with which our magazine continues to be read online via internet. In September we will celebrate the World Heart Day (Sunday 29) and as a symbol we take the new stamp issued by the Philatelic and Numismatic Azienda Autonoma di San Marino, to which we have dedicated, not surprisingly, our cover. The inspiration of the stamp’s theme belongs to Sanmarinese, Dr. Carlo Cruz, President of the Michigan Vascular Center
USA (see interview inside). In a few centimeters the illustrator, Fabio Ferrini, has managed to synthesize an eloquent message about prevention of cardiovascular diseases in his sketch. That’s why the stamp fits perfectly in thematic philately worldwide.

We left behind us a difficult year: the crisis, the recession, an economy in distress. What remains is a benefit that is always worth ‘investing’ in: the quality of life. We propose it anew in this first issue of 2013 involving the new Minister for Culture. Culture understood well beyond its more traditional meaning. Cuore-Vita’s constant commitment will be to continue to stimulate the world of
school, convinced in this regard that the education of the adult begins as a child.
Proper nutrition is an important element of lifestyle. So much the better it’s learned at a young age. Many dietary mistakes do not result from deliberate choices but rather a lack of knowledge of the basic rules. Nutrition education nowadays cannot refuse opening to new models of eating, the so-called ‘ready to eat’ foods suitable for instant consumption compared to others that need preparation. It’s an easy to grasp message for new generations accustomed to ‘bite and run’. Every day children and young people go to school, and that’s what makes it the ideal establishment where to teach health education. The role of the teacher in this sense is particularly suited to convey messages of health education compared to the role of the expert (such as a doctor), but the latter is needed to communicate to the teacher the most suitable tools to teach a healthy lifestyle. A synergy should be encouraged.
The Editorial staff send you best wishes for serene Easter festivities.
